Alexander was educated in the public schools, in Eliot Academy and various private schools.
In 1878 he entered the U. S. Revenue Cutter Service as second assistant engineer, and continued until 1895, when he retired from active labor, making his home at Kittery.
He was a Republican in politics, and had been a member of the school committee for a number of years and superintendent of schools. He was a prominent member of the Second Christian church.
